Don’t Sweat The Technique – Round 9 Results

I know a lot of you checked this round out but to the one person that had a crack at voting you’ve got a pretty damn good ear. You picked them all aside from Calski and Dazastah. Thanks again to everyone involved.

Don’t Sweat The Technique – Round 9

For this round of DSTT I put forward a track from a German record I picked up for $2 at a fair earlier in the year. It’s a strange record, a real mash Jazz, funk and some really open sounds of keys etc with varying tempos. Everything I want in a record to sample really. Some tracks have some German spoken word laid over the instrumentation . I’d love to get a translation of what he’s saying, that shit sounds serious.

Great use of the track from all producers. This segment was never intended to be a competition of who can make the best beat from the sample, that’s is a very subjective question in itself and we don’t want that shit here.  It’s intention is about listening to where the sample takes the producer and how their creativity gets them to the end result, if they use a whole loop or just a few notes of the melody. Thinking outside the box and putting forward a sample or a style of music to sample that’s out of someone’s comfort zone brings forward creativity in my opinion. Utilizing the skills and techniques to bring out your sound and letting the public see if they can pick it. This gives the public the opportunity to seek out some of the producers previous works also if they haven’t heard of them.

The sample probably wasn’t out of everyone’s comfort zone this round but it’s been fucking awesome to see what parts people chopped and looped and how creative everyone was. Thanks to all involved in the round.

Have a crack at guessing who made which beat during the week and I’ll reveal them Friday.

Don’t Sweat the Technique – Round 8

This month I though id switch it up a little and give the producers a drum break to level things out and see if you can still pick the programming over the sound. I might continue this for future rounds.

Only rules were that both producers had to use the drum break and of course the sample. I’ve picked up a couple of Al Di Meola’s albums over this years, a real mash of Jazz and latin flamenco type shit. Plenty of tempo and signature changes and some experimental stuff throughout, no real reason behind the dig this month other than it being in close reach. I hit up Realizm from Adelaide and local legend, Servo to do their thing. Thanks fellas, you both kilt that shit!

Have a guess below who mad which beat..I’ll reveal the producers at the end of next week.

Don’t Sweat the Technique – Round 7 Results

Looks like everyone was bang on in picking this round. Great mix of styles and chops, I could barely pic Rob’s flip! sheesh!
Thanks again for everyone involved..Most likely we’ll be skipping a round this month but we’ll be back in June for the round 8.
Should give us a little more time to come up with something to test the producers a little more and work outside their comfort zones.

Don’t Sweat the Technique – Round 7

This month we tried to get a bit of a Christ theme happening over April with Easter and all. AkidcalledChubz didn’t hit us with the obscure uptown gospel joints but he did come through with a deadly OST. The soundtrack to the film, The Cross and the Switchblade which was based off a book from the 60’s about a minister who turns around the lives of NY gang members life through Christ…That was the Easter link and we ran with it. Decent soundtrack, Chubz had a couple of tracks to choose from but I though this one would be the most interesting to flip.

Was great to see how these three utilized and approached the sample differently, giving some pretty varying results. All heaters in their own right. Shouldn’t be too tough to pick this round. Cheers to all involved. I’ll reveal next week sometime. Enjoy.

Don’t Sweat the Technique – Round 6 Results

Strange results on this. The votes were all over the shop. We had some thinking Tornts made Beat 2 and  some thinking he made beat 4 which was by Dontez. Myself and Kharnivor were on even votes for beat 1. Great sample and  great round. Cheers again to all that were involved and all that had a guess on this. Only planning on making this shit bigger with the more people that jump on board. Next round. We’re preparing an Easter special for round 7. Producers will have to think outside the box for this one I’m guessing. Maybe we’ll level the playing field some more to disguise some of the producers by dishing out the same drum break??

Don’t Sweat the Technique Round 6

Reached out to Dontez for our sample this month for DSTT. Here’s a few words about what he come up with. Peace Donny!

Aseke Poletus

Estonian instrumental jazz fusion and progressive rock band, active 1980-1984.

I picked this beauty up from an overseas seller who was getting rid of several Euro rock records. I offered him a deal for 10 or so & this is one of the LP’s that had plenty heat to work with. This entire record has some monumental gems that I thought were too eazy to flip so I’ve gone with a more complicated Jazz/fusion joint which rides in & out of different tempo’s and intensities. I’m not going to reveal name the track though. That’s for you diggers to figure out.

Have a guess at which producer made which beat and I’ll follow up next week with the results. Cheers to everyone getting us involved and helping us build.

Don’t Sweat the Technique – Round 5 Results

Here’s the results from Round 5.  Solid round, I thought people might have had a tough time picking the Must Volkoff and Indiseus but alas, seems like you all got it right apart from the split votes between the Brookes Cullings and Servo beats.

Lets see what we can come up with out them dust bins for Round 6!

Drop a comment and let us know how well you picked it and what made you pick em.

Don’t Sweat the Technique – Round 4 Results

Well…I was wondering why no results were showing up for the poll for Round 4. I must have fingered up the post and not added it. Apologies.

Producers revealed below for anyone interested.

Stay tuned for round 5 next month,  should be a cracker.

Don’t Sweat the Technique – Round 4

This round I thought Id ask Sean B if he wanted to get involved with things, he had the idea of blindfolding us and have us pick something out for the producers to flip. Cheers Sean.

Update:

Cheers to everyone getting involved with this round, took me a little longer to get it all together with the holidays just gone. Make sure you have a crack at picking who made what over the coming week and I’ll send the results live this time next week.

Don’t Sweat the Technique – Round 3 Results

Tough sample this round, looks like it was pretty split in finding the difference between Matty and LG. Thanks to  Matty Fresh and Lazy Grey for taking part and everyone who voted.

Don’t Sweat the Technique – Round 3

This round I thought I’d mix it up and jump out of the comfort zone of just diggin something decent from the crates. My goal was to head to the local Vinnies with $10 and hit up anything, not even Kamahl was off limits for this one..Just grabbed whatever I could for that amount.

Turns out my local only had 6 records. You should have seen the old prunes face light up with delight when I copped all 6 haha. She followed by telling me how much she love the seekers etc..Run Royal stay helping out the needy and unfortunate by coppin’ them dollar joints. 6 clams in total. I had a little video done up of me listening through the records but my camera fucked out at the midway point. Pretty mind numbing stuff even with some comic relief. Maybe next time?

Anyway, this month I invited few more producers than you’ll see posted. They were either too busy, didn’t get the memo or straight pussied out when they heard what I can only describe as a pretty underwhelming sample but, it was all I could really find with some variation throughout. Did some research and this dude has a fuck off discog, I’m suprised I have’nt see more of his shit as most of it would have been pressed here in Australia under ‘Music for Pleasure’. Certainly made all three of us think outside the box a little this round.

Cheers to Lazy Grey and Matty Fresh for getting involved. Much respect!

Don’t Sweat The Technique – Round 2 Results

Dope round this month. Everyone put in work on this sample. A standout for me was Servos using the vocal and his trademark chops, props to everyone involved.

Looks like the public picked the Dontez and Insideus but were pretty split between the Servo and Dkues.
