Just watch & listen to how it’s done! Kuntz say Hip Hop is dead! Well it’s the legends still doin’ it proper. BPM’s and lyrical warfare to tear apart ya despair!!
As the weekend approaches so too does another World Record Store Day. For many, it’s kind of like Valentine’s Day and other gimmick orientated days – why should we be told to show love on one day specifically, and not all year round? As many diggers are 365 and dedicated to finding that hidden gem in dusty crates, many do not subscribe to this day. Well, fuck that! I love it. It’s a great celebration of all things music, culture, independence and a kunt load of piss with good mates! Sounds dope to me!
So as many rush out to buy that 20th edition of Dilla’s Fuck Tha Police, Illmatic, Operation Doomsday & a slew of other re-re-re-releases, keep one thing in mind – it’s an ace day and a great excuse to see many friends in various spots throughout your city you may not have seen in a hot minute. Great live performances from MC’s, DJ’s & limited edition wax will be the flavour of the day. To all the diggers & hanger-on-ers, enjoy your day! I certainly will.
Here is a select few events happening in the Melbourne Hip Hop scene. For more info on your city hit this link…
In 1985 Schoolly D hit the world with the hardest drum machine sounds we had ever heard. Smashing TR 909 bass & snares and relentless cuts from his DJ Code Money, Schoolly dropped some of the rawest street Hip Hop ever.
Many say that Schoolly was the creator of the “Gangsta Rap” genre in Hip Hop, or at least one of the pioneers of that style & attitude. I certainly agree with this, but that is an argument/discussion for another day.
Here we have one of the greatest low budget clips I have ever seen in my life ( besides “Thor” clips) and my werd, if it ain’t one of the dopest as well. Dodgy lighting effects, crappy smoke machines & shitty props, bad acting and an age old animation show cut in between to simulate a car chase from the cops. The premise is simple – the boys don’t like Rock ‘n Roll and the scenes that feature them at a rock gig standing in B-Boy stances shaking their heads at what they are seeing is pure gold. In the process, they kidnap a few white boy rock fans and take them to their brainwashing chamber to convert them to Hip Hop by placing what looks like paper lamp shades over their heads. DJ Code Money’s Technics 1200’s are hooked up to the head devices, and he begins to cut, sending ill as fuck ’85 scratches down the line to the captured fellas brainholes. And then…BAM…converted Rap Fans! ” I Love Rap & I’m Proud”.
I first saw this clip on a VHS that I bought in 1988 on Stylus Video called “Hip Hop And Rapping In The House”.
Apart from some classic Run DMC, Eric B & Rakim & Bomb The Bass, this VHS generally sucked balls, but it was this Schoolly D vid that just blew me away. So raw, so budget and so entertaining. Check out the killer boomboxes with the Parkside 5-2 posse. Truly dope shit!
There is little or next to no info about the origins of this clip on the interwebs, as I would love to know the format it was shot on ( some form of videotape ) and who directed it. If I was to ever interview the great man himself, I would be sure to ask many questions about the genius of the video.
“…this ain’t Prince, this Schoolly D man we rap…Code Money man, tell ’em what’s up man!”
Merry Christmas everyone!

Here is the official LP trailer for Kings Konekted’s highly anticipated forthcoming LP entitled “Corrupted Citizens”, out thru the mighty Unkut Recordings. More info to come…but stick this in ya ear & eye holes until then! Deadly!!!
I recently caught this doc on Netflix during the week, and I must say, I can’t get it out of my head. It’s a monster. This has to be one of the most interesting films I have seen in a while and certainly one of the most unique approaches in capturing the evolution of the Hip Hop Culture.
It follows the beginnings of the infamous South Bronx gang “The Ghetto Brothers” and then proceeds to tell the story of rival gangs from the corners and boroughs of New York in the 1970’s. I’m not going to give too much away here so I’ll keep it brief…
The stock footage, interviews, narrative and love shown to this project are evident throughout. An amazing and educational watch so rare in our culture nowadays. Here lies the true story of “The Warriors”. Also, the “Ghetto Brothers” released an album in 1972. If you have a lazy $2000 laying around, jump on Discogs, there’s an OG there. Highly recommended.
Page 4 ad in “The Source” Magazine February 1992. The front cover was held down by The Geto Boys. At the time, “The Source Chart” had LP’s such as The Low End Theory, Mr.Scarface Is Back, Death Certificate, Fruits Of Nature plus many more in heavy rotation. Damn!!! Think we need to post a pic of that chart!!!
The legend Chill Rob is back with a new E.P entitled “Chilled Not Frozen” and here is the 1st single featuring R.A. in top notch form. Loving everything about this. The clip is a straight to camera piece, but when you have 2 M.C’s firing like this, keep it simple stupid. Straight up heat!!!!! Get at the release here…. http://www.nobodybuysrecords.bigcartel.com which by the way is a dope site with some crazy releases from Phill Most Chill, A.G. plus more…. Enjoy!
