RUN ROYAL EXCLUSIVE – “98:Foundation” (Trailer)

In the late 2000’s Bias B approached Heata regarding an idea to make a local documentary about the release of his Beeswax LP from 1998. Together with Discourse they formed a film crew and began interviewing people regarding the early years and development of Australian Hip Hop pre the 2000’s.
As more people were interviewed, the team started to realise that the project was bigger than just the story of one album. And so, the film took a different direction. This here is a Trailer cut from their interviews over time with original stock footage.

We feel that “98:Foundation” is a very important story to tell, not just for those who were around in the early days, but also for future generations to understand and respect the architects. This project has not been completed, with ideas waiting to be developed and funded towards a full length Doco feature. The trailer is just an example of what it could be with many more people yet to be interviewed and filmed.
With the assistance and hard work of people such as B Wiv (Daniel Cowan), Josh Davis & Trem One, the “98” trailer stands ready for future development. The burning question is….”would any one want to see this made into a full length Film?” So where to from here……

  2. This looks amazing!!

  3. This album was probably the most important album to a lot of the current, or older, generation of ‘underground’ Australian hiphop artists. I recall getting this CD as I was first starting to get into the aussie scene and everyone saying it was the quintessential Melbourne/graff/rap album to listen to. As a highschool kid trying to cut my teeth in the graff scene and even more in the rap scene, this was pretty much my bible for a while. Almost 20 years later, Bias is a friend… I own one of the original vinyl test pressings of this album, I have a copy of the original pressing, and also the repress both of the wax. I still consider this probably one of the most important albums to not necessarily the style I developed by the content and ethos on what I was doing for so long.

Ciecmate and I actually got to know each other better over Bias B stuff, as he was one of the few Aussie rappers we both knew and listened to at the time. Furthermore, Ciecers really made his name coming up against Bias in that Revolver battle years later… the year Bias took it, but still CIecers had some pearlers and really gave it to him in a way that people weren’t expecting from a Canberra kid they had not heard before…. that got his name out and earned him a bit of respect. A year later, I was living in Melbourne and they were inviting us into the Formula where we got to again get the early exposure we needed. Bias always had love for us and gave us opportunities, and forever we’ll be in his debt for that.

Incredible trailer for a really important and pivotal moment in my life and I really hope it gets fully laced up!

  4. Dam, this looks dope! Can’t wait.

  5. Bias B Beeswax LP is a testament of oz hip hop, personally I have 99.9% of the lyrics tattooed to my skull permanently. I know the release inside out and back to front.

Will never forget the first under age hip hop show I went to (which from memory was in 99′) @ Corner Hotel Richmond. “Boney & Stoney” EP launch, which played host to a show case of oz hip hop talent… Pioneers of the culture!

Looking forward to the documentary, got nothing but homage and respect for those that paved the way.
